Big-screen dreams start here.

Rocket Reels: Houston Kids’ Film Festival celebrates the creativity, imagination, and storytelling of Houston-area elementary and middle school students.

From animated adventures to laugh-out-loud comedies, mini documentaries, and unexpected experiments, we’re here to give young filmmakers a chance to share their ideas, connect with an audience, and experience the excitement of seeing their work on the big screen.

Who can submit a film?

Rocket Reels welcomes filmmakers in elementary and middle school throughout the Houston area. Students can create films on their own or with help from family and friends. No professional equipment or filmmaking experience is required — just a story to tell!

What kinds of films can I submit?

Almost anything! We welcome live action, animation, documentary, comedy, drama, experimental films, and everything in between. Your film can be funny, surprising, moving, strange, or completely original.

The one big rule: films must be two minutes or less. Be creative, think outside the box, and make every second count! Visit our submission guidelines for file formats, technical requirements, and instructions for entering your film.

What happens if my film is selected?

Selected films will premiere at the inaugural Rocket Reels festival in April 2027. Young filmmakers and their families can walk the red carpet, watch their work on the big screen, and celebrate the creativity of student filmmakers from across the Houston area.

There will also be awards! Festivalgoers can vote for the Audience Choice Award, and we’ll recognize Best in Show winners in both elementary and middle school categories. Our student producers will also dream up additional fun awards to celebrate the films and filmmakers that make this festival special.

Can I attend if I’m not submitting a film?

Absolutely! Rocket Reels is a celebration of young creativity, and everyone is welcome to join the fun. Bring your family and friends to cheer on local student filmmakers and discover what Houston’s youngest storytellers can do.

Festival admission will be ticketed. Stay tuned for the event date, venue, and ticket information.
